Snapshots of Dar es Salaam

Our life in Dar es Salaam, while colorful and memorable, was not what you’ll see in these pictures. Unlike in India, in Dar we lived in a very segregated community. Everyone around us was an expat. We ate in expat restaurants, lived in expat apartments and shopped in expat stores.  In some ways, if I’m being honest, I was more comfortable with this sort of arrangement. But pretty much simultaneously… I was extremely UNcomfortable. Over and over again this year I’ve been forced to confront my definitions of equality and hardship, but also, more unexpectedly; happiness and success.
